Plans for the new on-campus parking garage may take the place of three historic buildings on campus.
The parking garage was originally set to only demolish Highland Cafeteria, but new plans would cause the African American Cultural Center, Women’s Center and U.S. Civil War Center to also be demolished, the Baton Rouge Business Report said.
Gary Graham, director of Parking, Traffic and Transportation, told the Business Report the plan would eliminate two levels of the five-level garage and make it more cost-effective by going wider rather than taller.
The new plan still accommodates 750 cars, which would be used for student, faculty and visitor parking, Graham said.
Gary Graham declined to comment further to The Daily Reveille.
Graham told the Business Report the project would cost an estimated $21 million.
Relocation options will be discussed Aug. 9 with representatives of each group.
Some students on campus think the parking garage will be beneficial.
“I love the idea of a parking garage,” said Sarah Witt, food science sophomore. “It’s so hard for commuters to find parking spaces and I think a parking garage would do wonders for the school and the students.”
