After a hard fought season in the sand, three champions were crowned Sunday night during the sand volleyball intramural championships at the University Student Recreational Complex. The Blue Barracudas, Kappa Delta and NOLA Crew all won their respective championship games to gain bragging rights as the University’s best sand volleyball teams. In the co-rec championship game, The Blue Barracudas capped an undefeated regular season with a straight set, 21-17, 21-19, victory over Weekend at Bernies. The victory marked the second straight year the Barracudas have taken home the co-rec title.David Kunesh, industrial engineering sophomore, said it felt good to take home another championship.”It’s fun to play with your friends and good to spend time around each other,” he said.Kappa Delta upset top-ranked Chi Omega, 21-14, 21-17, to capture the women’s championship. Both teams were one player short and played the match 5-on-5, but Kappa Delta capitalized on Chi Omega’s sloppy play to control the match.Kappa Delta got to the finals with a three-set thriller earlier in the night over Delta Delta Delta, 21-18, 15-21, 15-12.”We got off to a slow start, but in the end we pulled it out,” said Kaitlyn Cole, interior design sophomore and Kappa Delta player. On the men’s side, NOLA Crew knocked off Dirty Souf in straight sets, 21-16, 21-19, to take home the men’s championship crown. “It was a real nail biter,” said Jeff Beben, electrical engineering senior and NOLA Crew team captain.Like The Blue Barracudas, the win was the second-straight championship for NOLA Crew.
