Construction of the parking lot at the site of the old Alex Box Stadium is underway. The stadium was demolished and construction workers are clearing the debris, said Herb Vincent, senior associate athletic director. The vacant plot will temporarily be used as a parking lot until the University decides on a final purpose for it, Vincent said. The demolition process of the stadium started in January, and the parking lot should be ready this fall, said Gary Graham, director of Parking, Traffic and Transportation.”The cost of demolition of the Alex Box Stadium will be about $300,000,” Vincent said in an e-mail to The Daily Reveille. “It is being paid with private funds through the Tiger Athletic Foundation.”TAF plans to recoup the costs by charging vehicles for gameday parking in the newly built lot, he said. The parking lot is estimated to hold about 500 to 600 commuter vehicles. The project won’t cause any changes in traffic flow or road closures, Graham said. The 2,500-capacity stadium, built in 1938, covered nearly 200,000-square feet and was named after Alex Box, an LSU athlete killed during World War II. The stadium was later expanded to hold 7,760 people.”As long as they put memorials in that place for all that it represented, it’s OK,” said Jared Angelo, coastal environmental science sophomore, who said he attended games at the old stadium for five years. Amanda Cason, interior design sophomore, said she is happy about the development, but she expected a parking garage in place of the stadium. Some students said they are discontent with the general parking structure on campus.”There’s not enough parking spots and way too many students,” said Ryan Julien, biology senior. The temporary parking lot construction at the stadium site is just one of the University’s upcoming parking renovation projects. The new Alex Box Stadium, which was completed prior to the 2009 baseball season, is situated 200 yards down Nicholson Drive from the original and currently hosts all of LSU’s baseball games. The final game played at the old stadium was on June 9, 2008, between LSU and UC Irvine in the NCAA Super Regionals.–Contact Sumit Kumar at [email protected]
