Junior swimmer Torrey Bussey and freshman diver Cassie Weil were the two Tigers representing LSU on the first day of the Women’s NCAA Championships at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind.
Bussey competed in the 200 individual medley relay and posted a time of 2:00.14 and Weil’s score of 268.60 was good for 28th place in the one-meter event.
“Cassie dove very well in the one-meter competition,” said diving coach Doug Shaffer in a news release.
“It is not her strongest event compared to the field. She was 28th but she really didn’t miss anything.”
The Lady Tigers now shift their focus to day two of the competition, which holds the team’s strongest events. Weil is slated to compete in the three-meter while Bussey will swim in the 100 breaststroke.
Bussey had a strong showing in the event at the Southeastern Conference Championships with a 10th place finish (1:00.30) and is looking to finish with a time below one minute.
“Torrey showed great promise for the rest of the meet,” said swimming coach Dave Geyer in a news release. “Torrey is foused in on her breaststroke for the rest of the meet.”
Bussey will also compete in the 200 medley relay team made up of her, freshman Caley Oquist, sophomore Amber Carter and junior Rainey White.
Weil is looking to continue her dominance on the three-meter where she earned female SEC freshman diver of the year honors at the SEC Championships.
“I really like Cassie’s focus today,” Shaffer said. “That is what I wanted to see as we move into her two strongest events, the three-meter and the platform.”
