LSU senior first baseman Mason Katz brought home local recognition following the baseball team’s sweep of Washington this past weekend, as he was named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s Hitter of the Week.
Katz, who lit up the scoreboard this past weekend against the Huskies with three home runs during the three-game series, was dominant at the plate over the past seven days. The senior hit for a .353 batting average with 10 RBIs and a .476 on-base percentage against the likes of Stephen F. Austin, Sacred Heart and Washington.
So far this season, Katz is batting .328 with a team-leading five home runs and 24 RBIs. The senior has continued to thrive in the No. 5 hole for LSU, and he has had success batting behind fellow senior outfielder Raph Rhymes.
Katz recently possessed an 11-game hit streak; however, it was broken up in an 0-for-3 performance in the first game of the WU series. He responded by collecting three hits, all homers, in the next two contests.
