Midterm week really got to me and I completely forgot about Facebook’s announcement in Menlo Park, Ca. But nevertheless, here’s what you’ll be reading about in your friends’ status updates for the next few months:
The New News Feed
Brace yourselves — Facebook is about to look very different.
The redesigned News Feed will feature separate streams for different content and gives the browser version a more streamlined, mobile-like look.
It’s broken into sections: applications like Messages are reduced to icons and go on the left, a standard news feed takes up the remaining space.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg said he wants the News Feed to be a “personalized newspaper,” and the new design is reminiscent of just that. Individual posts and pictures are larger and more emphasized.
But the changes aren’t all aesthetic. Facebook is now catering ads to your likes, so if you like “Taylor Swift,” you’ll get ads catered to Swift.
While the appearance changes are nice, I’m mentally preparing myself for the barrage of ceaseless whining that will swallow Facebook the moment these changes roll out.
You can add yourself to the waiting list for the feed here. Or, the changes will roll out “careful and slow” over the coming months.
