The LSU softball team dropped a 6-2 game to Louisville on Sunday to close out the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic, the final weekend tournament before the start of the Tiger’s Southeastern Conference schedule.
All-American pitcher Rachele Fico lost her third game in four starts for No. 11 LSU (17-4), giving up six runs on 11 hits by the No. 15-ranked Cardinals.
The Tigers finished with a 3-2 in this weekend, collecting wins against Syracuse, Penn State and No. 14 Michigan with book end losses to the Cardinals and No. 10 Oregon on Friday.
LSU now moves into SEC play, starting with a three-game series at Mississippi State that begins on Friday.
“We’re in a decent spot a month into the season, ut we still need to clean some things up,” said LSU coach Beth Torina according to a media release. “Going forward, it will be nice not to play five games against five different opponents during a weekend.”
Fico pitched both of the Tigers losses on Sunday and Friday, surrendering a career high nine runs in Friday’s 10-2 loss to Oregon.
LSU averaged a 1.22 ERA coming into the five-games at the Citrus Classic, but the Tigers’ pitchers struggled this weekend, combining to give up an average of 6.6 runs per game.
“I didn’t think we pitched well during the entire weekend,” Torina said. “We have to get back to work in the bullpen and do the things we’re capable of doing.”
LSU took an early advantage in Sunday’s loss with the help of five walks and a wild pitch, but the Tigers didn’t collect a single RBI despite forcing a Louisville pitching change in the first inning.
In fact the Tigers received little offense at all in the loss besides the 2-for-3 performance from junior Allison Falcon, who logged her team-high eighth multi-hit performance of the season.
“Our offense has to be more consistent,” Torina said. “They were fantastic a couple of times and a few times they didn’t swing the bats very well.”
