The phrase “history repeats itself” is one that is no stranger to the fashion world. Throughout the seasons we often see vintage trends reappear just as frequently as new trends are created. Here are a few of top old-school trends that are making their way back.
Going “Mad”
Coming back from the sixties, bright colors and psychedelic patterns have been tapped as just a few of the vintage trends returning this summer. For the best fashion trends from the 60’s and 70’s, we don’t have to look any further than AMC’s hit drama, “Mad Men”. The show’s lead costume designer, Janie Bryant, teamed up with the store Banana Republic earlier this month to release a Spring/Summer 2013 collection inspired by the fashion featured on the show. You can see the full collection, here. A few of the biggest trends include: patterned pants that stop at the ankle, quarter-length sleeved dresses in bright, fun colors, and sleeveless shell tops. Unfortunately, many of the pieces from the “Mad Men” collection are quite pricey, so that’s where Mod Cloth comes in. Mod Cloth is a great website that features all vintage fashion trends, all the time, for very reasonable prices.
Accessories
Not many accessories scream “vintage” louder than a pair of cat-eye sunglasses. Their shape is a fun design for accessory that has become quite boring from a design stand-point in recent years. To get your own pair, check out these adorable Contessa Cat Eye Sunglasses in Teal by A.J Morgan at Ruche for only $15 a pair. Another twist on the cat-eye trend is this pair from Nordstrom for just $14.
As far as jewelry goes, pearls are a classic trend that will never go out of style. You may also want to delve into some hippie fashion from the seventies with this pair of Vintage Peace Earrings from ASOS.
Shoes
Mod Cloth as a wonderful array of vintage shoes to choose from as well! If you want to go with a pair of sandals, try these strappy Band of Bold sandals and pair them with a sundress or maxi-skirt. Classic flats are actually not completely flat. They each usually have a very tiny heel which you can see, here. The vintage heels are usually shorter than the modern design and also have a skinnier heel.
Swimwear
As the weather continues to get hotter, pool and beach season is almost upon us! That means it’s time to stock up on some cute bathing suits. What’s great about bathing suits from the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s is that they work for almost any body type. Also, if you like more coverage while still looking stylish, vintage bathing suits are a much better alternative to the more modern and revealing looks. If you prefer a one-piece, try this Clean Water Women’s Polka Dot 1-Piece Swim Dress from Target (Yes, Target actually does have stylish options!). However, if you’re more of a two-piece kind of girl, go for this Snack Bar Beauty Two Piece in Black from ModCloth. Don’t forget, for swimwear, floral, polka dots, and stripes are your best friend when going for that retro look!
Happy shopping!
