The LSU softball team clinched a series win against defending national champion Alabama after the Tigers produced a 2-1 defeat of the Tide Friday night.
A Tiger Park record crowd witnessed LSU light up the scoreboard early after an second baseman Allison Falcon sac fly pushed center fielder A.J. Andrews across the plate in the first inning.
Shortstop Bianka Bell repeated her teammate’s sacrificial efforts when she hit a bases loaded sac fly in the third giving right fielder Simone Heyward the opportunity to score the eventual game winner.
LSU pitcher Ashley Czechner forfeited eight hits to Alabama and didn’t record a strikeout until the seventh inning, but, fortunately, allotted only one run in large part due to her defense stepping up in stellar fashion.
“I thought defense was the key tonight,” said LSU coach Beth Torina. “I thought we played great defense. They’ve got some really quick kids and slappers like we do and we handled them really well.”
Catcher Kellsi Kloss picked off two steal attempts and made a run-saving tag at the plate in the top of the second inning.
The win extends LSU’s win streak against Alabama in new Tiger Park to 7-0 and puts the Tigers in prime position to take their second sweep of the 2013 season.
