The LSU women’s golf team begins play today at the Southeastern Conference Championships at Greystone Country Club in Hoover, Ala.
Greystone is considered a neutral site and this will be the course’s first season as the permanent home for the women’s SEC Championships.
LSU coach Karen Bahnsen said she has never seen the course but has consulted with former LSU golfers who have played there.
“I’ve gotten some notes and I think the golf course is going to be a tough golf course,” Bahnsen said. “I think that is good for us because we are a pretty intelligent playing team, but it is just a matter of getting some putts to drop.”
None of Bahnsen’s players are familiar with the course either, but sophomore Madelene Sagstrom said she does not think that will be a problem.
“I’m just going to treat it like every other course we play,” Sagstrom said. “I’m going to take good notes during my practice round and prepare the same way I always do.”
Bahnsen said putting was the Lady Tigers’ biggest problem in the final round of the Rebel Intercollegiate on April 7. As a team, LSU shot a 15-over 303 in the final round to finish tied for sixth after playing the first two rounds at a combined 9-over.
LSU has had a week and a half to prepare since that round, and Bahnsen said she thinks her team has worked some of the kinks out.
“They have really used their time wisely,” Bahnsen said. “They have worked on the areas they felt they had to work on, and I think the team is in a good place mentally, so all we need to do is go out and have a good week of execution.”
Bahnsen said because she is unfamiliar with the course, she does not want to place any heightened expectations on her team, but also that if they play three solid rounds she could see them finishing anywhere in the top six.
The Lady Tigers finished in a tie for sixth at last season’s SEC tournament in Arkansas.
