The 2013 NFL Draft is officially two months away, and while several former Tigers are expected to turn heads at the NFL Combine with their physical attributes, one defensive lineman is doing so with his words.
Former LSU defensive end Sam Montgomery, a player expected to be either a late-first or early-second round choice come Draft Day, recently told the media that he would take games off against lesser opponents during the season while in Baton Rouge.
“You know, some weeks when we didn’t have to play the harder teams, there were some times when effort was not needed,” Montgomery said at his media interview at the Combine. “But when we had the big boys coming in — the Bamas or the South Carolinas — I grabbed close to those guys and went all-out.”
This isn’t the first time Montgomery has made noise since the Combine began.
Montgomery and fellow former defensive end teammate Barkevious Mingo both admitted at the podium Saturday to placing multiple bets over the course of the 2012 campaign. The number of sacks acquired over the season, the most sacks in the squad’s final game and whoever is drafted highest were all wagered on.
The impact that these reports and comments will have on Montgomery’s Draft stock is uncertain.
Montgomery was an unquestioned force on the Tigers’ defensive line in 2012. He totaled 37 tackles and eight sacks for LSU before declaring for the 2013 NFL Draft as a junior.
