In February and September of each year, New York Fashion Week becomes the mecca of fashion on this side of the Atlantic (fashion weeks are held throughout the year in Milan, London, and Paris as well). The world’s top designers flocked to New York this past week to showcase their best designs for the Fall 2013 season.
Despite the fact that some of the actual designs cost more than our annual tuition at LSU, we can still pull off the trends with items already in our closets or steals at the mall or thrift store (shout out to Macklemore!).
Here are some highlights of the top trends from New York Fashion Week 2013:
Layers:
This trend is fairly easy to pull off, but you have to remember to pull it off like a fashionista and not a like a hobo. Make the outfit pop by wearing articles of clothing that have different patterns, are made out of different material, and/or, are different colors. To make sure the pieces that you wear together complement each other color-wise, just follow the simple rules of The Color Wheel.
Patterns
Patterns are always a fun alternative to wearing just one solid color. From tribal to animal print, don’t be afraid to experiment with bold designs.
Red:
Almost all of the top designers showcased multiple red designs this year. Most of the outfits featured little to no colors other than red. A great way to keep from looking like a floating head in a sea of red is to wear multiple shades of red together and by colorblocking.
Baggy Clothes (?):
This trend is amazing news for anyone in Louisiana who hates the feeling of clothes sticking to skin during a humid day. Instead of tight skinny jeans or shorts, try loose–fitting shorts or pants. High-waisted pants are great for keeping your figure intact.
Happy shopping!
