The LSU softball team’s Friday night started off with a no hitter and ended with the Tigers extending their winning streak to nine games.
Senior, All American pitcher Rachele Fico retired 21 of the 25 Ohio State batters she faced at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic on her way to leading the No. 11 Tigers to a 7-0 win against the Buckeyes.
Freshman Kellsi Kloss hit the team’s 14th home run in the game, putting LSU’s 2013 season total past its 2012 counterparts through just 13 games.
Junior Ashley Czechner wasn’t able to replicate her teammate’s performance, despite the Tigers earning a commanding 6-1 win against UNLV.
Czechner allowed four hits against the Rebels but struck out another seven batters.
The Tiger offense exploded for four runs and five hits in the bottom of the sixth inning, sealing the victory for LSU coach Beth Torina’s team.
LSU recorded 27 hits through the two games. That number inflates to 39 hits if the previous night’s 10-6 win against BYU is taken into account — a game that ended with a grand slam off the bat of freshman Sandra Simmons in the top of the ninth.
Saturday and Sunday will be the meat of the Tigers’ trip to the Golden State when LSU plays No. 14 Arizona and No. 16 UCLA respectively.
The Tigers will play the Wildcats at 7 p.m. Saturday night.
