It may have been the LSU softball team’s season opening game, but the Tigers’ bats seemed to be in mid-season form, as LSU rolled to an 8-0 victory against No. 22 North Carolina.
LSU started early, posting five runs in the first inning. Two runs in the first came from junior third baseman Tammy Wray’s towering home run to left-center field.
Wray, who totaled nine RBI’s through the entire 2012 season, finished the game with three RBI’s.
Senior 2012 All-American Rachele Fico pitched a scoreless five innings for the Tigers from the pitching circle, but the performance didn’t come easy.
Fico struggled to control her pitches early in her first appearance in 2013, but she seemed to settle into a groove as the game progressed, striking out two consecutive batters to close the game out in the fifth inning.
Fico ended with five strikeouts and three walks while stranding eight North Carolina runners.
LSU will begin the second game of a double header against Purdue at 7 p.m. Friday’s double header is the first of five games the Tigers are hosting this weekend during the Tiger Classic.
