Rebecca Docter: What’s the story behind the name “The Breton Sound?”
Brian Pretus (Bass/Vocals): It was a rejected name from a band that I was in about six or seven years ago. It lost out to what I thought was a weaker name, so when we started this band, we were thinking about a name and I was just like, “We should use that name!” The Breton Sound is actually an outlet in the Gulf of Mexico.
RD: You released “Maps” this past April. What has The band been up to since then?
Jonathan Pretus (Vocals/Guitar): We released it in September on vinyl. We’d been promoting that, John just joined our band about two months ago. We’ve been playing shows and writing new music.
RD: Who are your influences as musicians?
JP: Kind of all over the place—Brian and John come from punk backgrounds, Stephen grew up with like, prog and metal, I grew up with some like, pop rock. If you had to pick, it’d be like, Descendants, Van Halen, Beatles, Suicide Machines, so we’re pretty all over the map.
RD: What genre do you think The Breton Sound fits into?
Stephen Turner (Guitar/Vocals): I like to just say it’s rock. If we were around in like, 1995, we’d be alternative.
RD: What’s your writing style like?
BP: Slow. It’s like one of us will come in with like a main riff or idea, or even a whole song written, then everyone will write their own parts and it will end up being a completely different song.
ST: Then we’ll bring it in to the studio and the juices will marinate out. We’ve got some that have evolved four or five times.
