Faculty and students evacuated the Huey P. Long Field House around 2:00 p.m. on Thursday after a fire alarm.
LSU Police Department spokesman Capt. Cory Lalonde said the fire is under control at this time.
Lalonde said the fire originated on the roof of the wing of the Field House closest to the Cox Center for Student Athletes.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, Lalonde said.
Lalonde said BRFD are working to ensure the fire is extinguished. Once the fire is out, they will evacuate smoke from the building and determine the cause of the fire.
Melinda Solmon, director of the School of Kineseology, said students with classes at 3:30 p.m. today have been canceled and teachers will be updating students with information via Moodle.
Dawn Capizzo, social work graduate student, was in class listening to a presentation when she began to smell smoke.
“It’s not normal for a classroom to smell like a campfire,” Capizzo said.
After smelling the smoke, she said the class began to see the flumes and then the fire alarm was heard.
Currently, Fieldhouse Drive is closed between the Fieldhouse and the roundabout near Cox Auditorium.
