After coming off of a 44-41 loss at Georgia, LSU had plenty of areas to improve heading into their road matchup at Mississippi State. The Tigers (5-1, 2-1 SEC) took care of business in Starkville beating the Bulldogs (2-3, 0-2 SEC) handily 59-26.
The offense continued to click on all cylinders as Senior QB Zach Mettenberger completed 86.1% of his passes for 340 yards and 2 touchdowns. Both his touchdowns went to Junior WR Odell Beckham Jr., who had a career night hauling in 9 catches for 179 yards, as he currently leads the nation in all-purpose yards with 228.1 per game. On the ground, LSU’s stable of running backs dominated the line of scrimmage rushing for 223 yards and 6 touchdowns. Jeremy Hill led the way with 157 yards and 2 touchdowns, but Kenny Hilliard took advantage of his opportunities and scored a career-high 3 touchdowns. Senior RB Alfred Blue also added an 18-yard touchdown late in the 4th quarter to give LSU a 52-26 lead. Defensively, LSU continued to struggle in the first half allowing 274 offensive yards to Mississippi State, but outscored the Bulldogs 31-3 in the second half to pick up their 2nd conference win.
The defense was without S Craig Loston, but Sophomore Corey Thompson took his place and co-lead the defense with 6 total tackles. True Freshman DB Tre’Davious White had the first interception of his career in the 4th quarter and added a 40 yard return to the play to the Mississippi State 5 yard line to set up a Jeremy Hill touchdown. In order for LSU to beat #17 Florida this Saturday, Mettenberger and the offense will need to continue their play through the first 6 games, and the defense will have to look to create turnovers and put pressure on Florida QB Tyler Murphy, who will be making just his 3rd career start.
Kickoff for Saturday’s game at Tiger Stadium will be at 2:30 CT.
