LSU President F. King Alexander announced Friday the first pay raise University employees will receive in four years at the Board of Supervisors meeting.
Alexander said the pay adjustments will reach up to four percent.
“We’ve been able to work right up until last night to see what we could cobble together regarding salary increases at a time when some economies are improving around the country, and we know we must do better,” Alexander said.
He said the pay adjustments will vary by campus, institution and personnel type based on the financial obligations and circumstances of each campus.
The increases will impact the vast majority of faculty through merit-based increases.
“We must use this as perhaps the new benchmark for establishing stable salary growth in years to come, and to make sure that our university and campuses are as competitive as possible and the most effective institutions in not losing our students to other universities and not losing our talented faculty, research dollars and staff members to other campuses and early retirement,” Alexander said.
Alexander published a letter further elaborating on the system-wide pay increases.
Also during the meeting, the Board unanimously passed a measure that will establish a restricted account for the Greek assessment fee collected from members of University fraternities and sororities. It will also establish restricted accounts in departments such as biology, chemistry and physics that collect registration fees from training and academic orientation sessions and continuing education programs.
According to Wendy Simoneaux, CFO, assistant vice president and comptroller of the Office of Budget and Finance, explained this will allow Greek organizations to become more autonomous and self-sustaining.
Simoneaux said on April 23, former LSU President William Jenkins approved a Greek life fee of $54 per semester. That money will now be used toward making fraternities and sororities less dependent on University funding.
“LSU is at this time, requesting that a restricted account is established to accumulate these funds to facilitate the transition the Greek Life Program from a general fund unit to a self-generating unit,” Simoneaux said.
