Despite the fact that TV spinoffs are very rarely successful, both cable and broadcast networks have given the green light to multiple new spinoffs that will be premiering during the 2013-2014 TV season.
In case you’re unfamiliar with the term, a spinoff is a television series that usually features a character, and sometimes multiple characters, that were present in a previous series. The spinoff also contains some element that connects it to the previous show and uses it to “spin off” into a new direction, which is where the term comes from.
While many spinoffs are created after the original show has ended its run, recently there has been a surge of spinoffs that premiere while their original show is still airing.
Below is a preview of the new fall spinoff shows as well as a bonus series that will be premiering in the spring.
1. “Ravenswood” (ABC Family)

“Pretty Little Liars” has proved to be ABC Family’s most successful series to date, and shows no signs of stopping even after four seasons.
What’s the best way to capitalize on that success, you ask?
The answer is “Ravenswood.”
The new show will take Hanna’s beau, Caleb Rivers, from Rosewood to Ravenswood, a nearby town with a mysterious past.
2. “Once Upon a Time: In Wonderland” (ABC)
If you’re a fan of Disney and/or fairytales, the “Once” franchise was made for you.
The spinoff of “Once Upon a Time” will follow Alice (of the tale “Alice in Wonderland”), but will showcase a much more unique telling of her story. This Alice is trapped in an asylum where she fights to escape back to Wonderland to reunite with the love of her life who happens to be a genie.
The creators of the series told TV Guide that the spinoff won’t be as dark as its predecessor, describing it as a “psychedelic romance.”
3. “The Originals” (The CW)

One of the most anticipated new shows premiering on The CW this fall is “The Originals,” a spinoff of the network’s hit series, “The Vampire Diaries.”
“The Originals” will feature the vampire-werewolf hybrid, Klaus Mikaelson, as he attempts to reclaim control of New Orleans in the name of his family. The only thing that stands in Klaus’ way is his former friend, Marcel, who has taken absolute control over the city’s supernatural community.
Bonus: The next show may not be premiering until 2014, but it will most likely become the spinoff that you are most looking forward to.

“Girl Meets World,” a spinoff from the classic 90’s sitcom, “Boy Meets World,” will be heading to the Disney Channel next year.
Cory and Topanga will be back after 14 years with three kids: Elliott (14), Riley (13) and Louis Matthews (5).
The show will mainly revolve around Riley (the “girl” in “Girl Meets World) as she navigates middle school with her best friend, Maya. Unfortunately for Riley, her dad just happens to be their History teacher.
Topanga, who was a straight-A student during her days at John Adams High, now owns a popular after school hangout spot that specializes in pudding. Yeah, I’m confused about that part, too.
Fingers crossed for visits from Shawn, Eric, and (of course) Mr. Feeny!
