The Emmy’s: 3 hours of watching the same people win the same awards year after year.
As a TV and award show junkie, it can be pretty disheartening to watch how predictable this award show can be. However, I tune in every year in the hopes that “Parks and Recreation” finally wins over “Modern Family” or for anything scandalous to happen for that matter.
Maybe not a Miley Cyrus twerking on Robin Thicke level of scandalous, but simply anything to spice the show up and make it a little less “Meh-mmys.”
One of the few things that have made this Emmys race interesting is that Netflix has multiple shows that were nominated. This marks the first time that the streaming service has received recognition at the Emmys.
Here’s a preview of what we can expect from the show as well as my predictions.
Neil Patrick Harris is hosting the Emmys for the second time which doesn’t really help the show’s record of repeating itself. However, Harris is a natural on stage; he has also hosted the Tony awards multiple times.
Harris is the one sure thing about the show that won’t disappoint.
LEAD ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES:
Connie Britton (Nashville) - Claire Danes, (Homeland) – Michelle Dockery, (Downton Abbey )- Vera Farmiga, (Bates Motel) – Elisabeth Moss, (Mad Men) – Kerry Washington, (Scandal), – Robin Wright, (House of Cards)
My pick: Kerry Washington
Who’s actually going to win: Claire Danes
I have to admit, it was pretty shocking to see Kerry Washington’s name in the list of nominees. Not because she doesn’t deserve it, but because it’s rare these days for the Academy to recognize a drama series that isn’t on a cable network. Also, Washington is the first African-American to be nominated in this category since 1996.
LEAD ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES:
Hugh Bonneville, (Downton Abbey) – Bryan Cranston, (Breaking Bad) – Jeff Daniels, (The Newsroom) – Jon Hamm, (Mad Men) – Damian Lewis, (Homeland )- Kevin Spacey, (House of Cards)
My pick: Kevin Spacey
Who’s actually going to win: Bryan Cranston
If you haven’t watched “House of Cards” on Netflix yet, stop reading and go binge-watch the heck out of that show. It was hands down the best new show of the year and it was led by Kevin Spacey, who is an absolute force to be reckoned with.
Don’t be shocked when “Breaking Bad” sweeps all the award shows this year and next year, though. When critically acclaimed shows near their end, they usually take home most of the awards. So, it’s pretty inevitable that Cranston will win the award for the fourth time.
Breaking Bad – Downton Abbey- Homeland – Game of Thrones- House of Cards- Mad Men
My pick: Breaking Bad
What’s actually going to win: Breaking Bad
While some may disagree, I think that Breaking Bad really began to reach its peak during season four. After all of the heart attacks I had to endure, it’s definitely worthy of this award.
The other shows are all great in their own right, but they’re going to have to wait until 2015 (when Breaking Bad is officially out of the award show race) before they’ll have a chance at this category.
LEAD ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES:
Jason Bateman,( Arrested Development) – Louis C.K. (Louie) – Don Cheadle, (House of Lies) Matt LeBlanc, (Episodes) – Jim Parsons, (Big Bang Theory)- Alec Baldwin, (30 Rock)
My pick: Louie C.K
Who’s actually going to win: Jim Parsons or Alec Baldwin
Louie C.K has been snubbed year after year in this category and it’s about time he wins his first Emmy.
LEAD ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES:
Lena Dunham, (Girls) – Laura Dern, Enlightened – Tiny Fey, (30 Rock) – Amy Poehler, (Parks and Recreation) – Julia Louis-Dreyfus, (Veep) – Edie Falco, (Nurse Jackie)
My pick: Tina Fey
Who’s actually going to win: Julia Louis-Dreyfus
I’m not a huge fan of saying that someone deserves to win just because their show is ending, but Tina Fey is hilarious and really deserves to be recognized for creating the hilarious Liz Lemon.
COMEDY SERIES:
The Big Bang Theory – Girls – Louie – Modern Family – 30 Rock – Veep
My pick: –
What’s actually going to win: Modern Family
I don’t even have a pick for this category. My pick would have been Parks and Recreation, but the show was massively snubbed this year.
Modern Family has won every year since 2010 (the first year this show was eligible for nominations). The show is funny, but this is ridiculous, Academy!
