Lorde took the charts at age 16 with her single “Royals” and her debut album, Pure Heroine, is projected to do the same. The singer from New Zealand is here to stay for hopefully a long time and has continued to gain my respect with her new release. To compare, any of the songs could easily fit in the Drive soundtrack.
Many listeners already have the lyrics to “Royals” imbedded in their heads but the singer has more surprises to come. The minimalistic music helps to showcase Lorde’s vocal talent and continues throughout the whole album. The flow from track one to track ten creates a mellow atmosphere in your ears. The beat is very similar in all of the songs but it helps with the flow of the album.
“A World Alone”, track 10, ends the album on a perfect note. This song can easily be the next hit Indie wedding song in the upcoming year. The lyrics are relatable and the continuing minimalist music in the background creates the perfect love song. Being a sucker for love songs this became my favorite song on the album. It creates an image of an empty room with a crowd outside that can’t penetrate the perfection inside.
Another track to check out is “White Teeth Teens”. It is a ’50s sounding song with a modern twist and has a fun beat. Lastly, “Ribs” has a very interesting intro. If you listen to the song with your headphones, the song sounds like it is going from the right side of your head to the left. It slowly increases in speed as the song moves along. This effect is very clever in catching someone’s attention.
Being the age she is, Lorde has a lot of time to impress us. Although, her debut album is already shocking enough to grasp the world’s attention. I can’t wait to see where she goes from here.
