LSU coach Les Miles addressed the media Monday during his first “Lunch with Les” session of the 2013 football season.
Miles opened the presser speaking about TCU coach Gary Patterson and the Tigers’ first contest of the season, noting that he’s expecting the Horned Frogs to pose a challenge when the two squads match up Saturday night.
“For us not to start fast would be a mistake,” Miles said. “It’s really an ideal-style opponent. The quality opponent should sharpen us pretty well.”
One of the primary questions heading into LSU’s first game of the season involves sophomore running back Jeremy Hill’s playing status. Hill dealt with a number of offseason troubles following his involvement in an April bar fight in Baton Rouge.
“We said earlier that he will be withheld from play,” Miles said. “That is going to take place, and our discipline will be internal at this point. I don’t think we have much further to say.”
Miles did not comment on whether or not Hill would join the team in Dallas.
He did comment on the status of injured right tackle Josh Williford, noting that he will not play this coming season. Instead, Williford will play a role as a student coach.
Miles also said that he expects senior quarterback Zach Mettenberger to grow exponentially in his final season.
“Zach expects more out of himself going into his final campaign,” he said. “[LSU Offensive coordinator] Cam [Cameron] is a very demanding coach and is knowledgeable and wants to help [Mettenberger] compete at a high level.”
The same expectation goes for junior wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.
“I think he’ll look forward to making bigger plays,” Miles said. “He’s a guy who had a very good year a year ago, but we could really ask more of him, and he could ask more of himself.”
Miles said he is expecting the pace of the offense to change throughout the game, with the potential for a huddle or no-huddle offense being evident. He mentioned he wants to play a number of receivers to help expand the offensive attack.
