In fashion, it is so often that we hear the phrase, “______ is the new black,” with trendiest color used to fill in the blank. After being put on the back burner for so long, black is officially reclaiming its spot.
At the Screen Actors’ Guild awards this past Sunday, more actresses like Anne Hathaway (“Les Miserables”), Michelle Dockery (“Downton Abbey”), Claire Danes (“Homeland”), and Tina Fey (“30 Rock”), opted for black gowns over bright colors or white.
The most obvious commonality among all of these ladies’ gowns is that none of them are just plain black. They show that some of the best ways to pull off any black look is by pairing it with a design or accessory that makes the whole outfit pop.
Here are a few ways to rock black without looking drab.
1. Accessorize, accessorize, accessorize!
Belts are a great accessory to use to brighten up a dark outfit. They also help accentuate your figure when worn with a dress.
2. Colorblocking
Colorblocking is a term used in fashion when blocks of different colors are used in the same outfit. The great thing about black is that it can be placed with almost any other color and still look fashionable. Key word: almost. Colorblocking gets iffy if too many different colors are put together at once. Lets leave having all the colors of the rainbow in one sitting to Skittles.
3. Play with fabrics
Whether you pair a knit top and a leather skirt or a sheer top and a lace skirt, the difference in fabrics helps the outfit stand out even with little to no help from accessories. This is a great option if you’re not big on wearing belts or necklaces.
4. Embellishments
Sequins, spikes, and jewels, oh my! Even the smallest embellishments can help a black dress or top go from drab to fab.
