Although the weather has said otherwise for weeks, summer has yet to officially emerge. The summer solstice will begin tomorrow, and to celebrate, event planners Wildflower Presents and Japanese restaurant Tsunami will be hosting “The Summer Solstice — a White Linen Party.”
The summer solstice occurs every year on the third week of June, marking the start of summer and the longest day of the year. Danny Breaux, owner of Wildflower Presents, decided that Tsunami would make a prime location for the solar happening because its ideal rooftop viewing option.
“I mean, you’ve got the best view in the city, and really if we’re looking at summer solstice, I mean, that’s when the sun reaches the highest point in the sky … it’s just a great place to watch the sunset,” Breaux said.
The white linen theme is popular worldwide during all seasons, but it works well for a Louisiana summer event because the breathability of linen and the color white attracts less sunlight than darker colors, according to Breaux. He said white linen attire is encouraged but not necessary.
The party will feature music by DJ Money-P who Breaux said will be spinning up-tempo lounge music for the evening.
Another feature of the event will be live art paintings by local artists T.J. Black and Marc Fresh among others. The painters will have an “art battle,” which consists of auctioning their paintings to the highest bidder.
“So you get to see live art happening, and a lot of these artists — their work goes for a lot of money,” Breaux said. “It actually gives people a chance to buy art for a great price.”
Along with music and art, there will also be other performers, but Breaux said they are meant to be a surprise.
Donovan Duplantis, general manager of Tsunami, said the restaurant recently partnered with the Manship Theatre and will be showing a film noir selection for the party.
Duplantis also said there will be an after party at the newly reopened Red Star Bar, which will offer drink specials to those who participated at the white linen party.
Breaux said Abita Brewing Company, one of the party’s sponsors, will offer specials.
Duplantis also said there will be half off specials on certain martinis.
The event is free and open to the public on Saturday from 7 p.m. until 11 p.m.
