A chemical plant explosion Thursday morning in Geismar, La. injured 73 and killed one person according to Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal.
The explosion occurred at approximately 8:37 a.m. at the Williams Olefins plant in Geismar, according to a news release. Around 600 plant workers were present when the explosion happened.
“We are currently focused on the safety and well-being of our employees, contractors and the local community who are responding to the situation,” the release said.
Baton Rouge General received eight of the injured, many of whom were being treated with burns.
University construction management senior Reed Hart works at Westlake Vinyls, a chemical plant five miles away from Williams Olefins.
Hart and his coworkers were asked to evacuate when the location of the fire was unknown.
“We thought it was at our site,” Hart said.
Once they determined the fire was elsewhere, Hart returned to work before another evacuation was ordered out of precaution.
“We didn’t know what chemical leaked out … so they sent us home early,” he said. “Everything on a chemical plant is super safety-oriented.”
Jindal told the media in a press conference there will “absolutely” be an investigation into the cause of the explosion.
