After sophomore southpaw Cody Glenn surrendered three runs in only two innings of work, LSU coach Paul Mainieri turned to senior left-hander Brent Bonvillain to minimize the damage.
Bonvillain proceeded to toss 4 1/3 innings of five-hit, one-run baseball, recording three strikeouts and holding down a potent Tar Heels offense.
Meanwhile, the Tigers have had offensive troubles of their own.
LSU loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning and put runners on first and second with two outs in the bottom of the fifth.
Both times, LSU senior left fielder Raph Rhymes failed to come through in the clutch, popping out lazily to the right side of the diamond. Rhymes has left eight runners on base.
On the flip side, senior first baseman Mason Katz put the first Tigers run on the board with an RBI single to left field in the bottom of the fifth.
With a runner on second and two outs, though, LSU senior reliever Chris Cotton allowed an RBI single to left field off the bat of UNC freshman right fielder Skye Bolt.
The Tigers responded with a run in the bottom of the seventh after freshman shortstop Alex Bregman grounded into a double play with runners on first and third and no outs.
After seven innings, UNC leads LSU 4-2.
