Australian electronic duo Empire of the Sun paint a world ruled by an “emperor” and a “prophet” with its latest record “Ice on the Dune”. The concept album is an interesting idea, but it doesn’t necessarily come across unless it’s been stated. However, the group did make an auxiliary album, which details the story track by track. The music ranges from bubble gum pop, to theatrical with a dash of new wave dance. The complex layering of synth and electronic nuances keep the album intriguing as well as the sometimes effeminate vocal style. While a little bit cheesy, one of the softer songs “I’ll Be Around,” is a sentimental stand out from many of the other up-tempo numbers. However, for those looking for something to shake it to this summer, “Ice on the Dune” has plenty to offer.
