Art and Design Librarian Marty Miller spent part of her first semester at the University aiding in architecture students’ work being displayed in Middleton Library.
The architecture students worked with LSU Library faculty to 3D scan objects from Hill Memorial’s Special Collections.
Miller said she interviewed the ARCH 5004 students going into the project to find out what they hope to gain from the project and what image they hoped to communicate upon completion. The input she received from the students is intended for publication, Miller said.
The project is part of Middleton’s new effort to showcase student work in the main lobby of the library. It is also an opportunity for students to interact with the librarian within their field of study, Miller said.
As the art and design librarian, Miller said she hopes to have a more art-friendly space in the library, and this project is an example of this ideal.
In her short time at the University, Miller’s outreach to classes on campus has been a major focus, she said. She will be working with a different architecture class next semester and will be more embedded in the course, she said.
Miller will be assisting in research in the class and giving presentations to the students, she said. She said she wants the image of the LSU Libraries to be friendly and enthusiastic about student work.
“We’re here and we’re interested in helping with class work and projects. We have things we can use to help students out,” Miller said.
Miller will also start having office hours in the Communication across the Curriculum art and design studio, she said.
Information Literacy and Outreach Librarian Mitch Fontenot is also working to educate students on campus about library resources. Fontenot has spent the semester teaching an introductory library and information science course for the Global Connections Residential Life program.
The course focuses on introducing students to library and information organization, access and retrieval.
The display in Middleton is one of the many ways the library is attempting to collaborate with classes and professors on campus, Miller said.
