Vintage items offer a look into history through the beauty and craftsmanship of an object and its longevity. At Aladdin’s Lamp Antiques, the staff prides itself on vintage furniture, odd items and antique curiosities.
Family owned by Jeanne Hanson and her son Greg Hanson for more than 25 years, the shop has been a hidden treasure, containing numerous rare finds that have decorated the homes of families across the nation.
The business started as a weekend project for Jeanne Hanson when she decided she wanted to open up a little shop for leisure.
The little shop and weekend venture quickly grew into what Jeanne said was a creation of its own that has given her great business and clients.
College students often come in looking for small knickknacks or decor that can embellish and furnish their homes.
Mass communication junior Dondalyn Breaux said she experiences a homey feel whenever she visits that adds to the beauty of the building and the objects inside of it.
“The inside had me in awe, and it is an awesome place that I have found great objects to put in my home,” Breaux said.
Aladdin’s Antiques carries oddities like alligator heads, old typewriters and old-style cameras, which help add to the “blast from the past” atmosphere.
“We have had a swordfish bone, which is very rare, and we have also had leopard skin and other interesting things like that,” Jeanne Hanson said.
The antique shop offers creative pieces that help make this store different than a typical Hobby Lobby or a furniture store.
“I want people to have a good time when they come in our store, and I want them to find something that makes them excited,” Jeanne Hanson said.
The store has also had its fair share of politicians and Hollywood South movie crews come in to explore this one-of-a-kind shop.
Aladdin’s Antiques has been in several locations but has kept residence for the last 10 years on Government Street, since Greg Hanson joined the business.
He said he feels there is never a dull moment being with his mom at the shop.
“She is very entertaining and quite knowledgeable,” Greg Hanson said.
Aladdin’s Antiques is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Sunday from 12 to 4 p.m.
