The LSU women’s tennis team was dominated by No. 4 Florida, losing 4-0 in Gainesville, Fla. on Sunday.
The loss was LSU’s third straight conference loss, but losing freshman Joana Vale Costa — the Lady Tigers No. 1 player — to injury, could prove to be the biggest blow.
Vale Costa was trailing her opponent in singles 4-3 when she was forced to retire from the match because of injury.
LSU coach Julia Sell was unavailable for comment after the match.
The Lady Tigers were dominated on the day by the Gators in both doubles and singles.
The doubles saw LSU lose with relative ease on courts one and two by the scores of 8-2 and 8-4. The Gators sported three doubles pairings ranked in the top 40.
Florida dominated singles as well, winning the other two matches besides Vale Costa’s forfeited match in straight sets.
The losses to both South Carolina and Florida put the Lady Tigers on a three-game losing streak and now see them with a record below .500 (9-10) and a Southeastern Conference record of 2-8.
LSU will now look ahead to hosting Tulane on Wednesday in hopes of snapping the three-game skid, before returning to SEC play Friday when they host Tennessee.
