Paper Diamond is a firm believer that technology can increase an artist’s musical capabilities.
Alexander Botwin, better known as Paper Diamond, uses his background as a musician and interest in technology to strengthen his glitch-hop sound which will be coming to this year’s BUKU Music + Art Project.
Botwin uses an iPad uploaded with the latest in open sound control and production software to enhance the quality of his shows.
“I embrace new forms of technology. People didn’t think Jimi Hendrix could do something cool with the electric guitar and that turned out great,” Paper Diamond said.
Paper Diamond began his music career in 2004 as a bassist for the electronic band Pnuma Trio. After creative differences began to cause conflict within the band, Paper Diamond left to begin his solo project.
Skilled in playing other instruments like violin, guitar, drums and keyboard, Paper Diamond decided to combine those talents with his knowledge of electronic music to develop his sound.
In 2011, he released his first full-length album, “Levitate.” Shortly after the album’s release, Paper Diamond began touring and playing festivals including Coachella, Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza. Most recently, he performed a set at this year’s South by Southwest festival.
Paper Diamond said he has been to New Orleans multiple times during his musical career, but each time presents something different.
“I want to live there at some point. Whether it’s a new restaurant or place to hang out, I always find something new,” he said.
Paper Diamond also explained a Paper Diamond show will be “crazy,” but there is more to his music than that. He said that his set is eclectic because of the attention to detail he uses when thinking about his live sound.
“I like to take people on a journey and give them an experience. I’ve got a ton of new music to play for New Orleans,” Paper Diamond said.
He mentioned that the best part about his career are the shows he performs. He continued by saying the fans are the key reason he makes music and without them, he would lose his muse.
Paper Diamond has worked with popular electronic dance artists such as Diplo, Bassnectar and Flosstradamus. He said meeting the people who he frequently listens to encourages him to grow as a musician and try new things.
“It’s been a crazy three years being able to write, perform and tour. My music is an escape for my fans and myself,” Paper Diamond said.
Paper Diamond will be performing Friday at the Float Den location at Buku. The show will start at 5:45 p.m. Single day tickets are $89.50 for general admission and $209.50 for VIP. Two-day general admission tickets are on sale for $169.50.
