Former LSU linebacker Tahj Jones was shot Friday night by another former Tiger football player in an altercation over a woman, according to a police news release.
Jones, a Sulphur native, was in his hometown and showed up to a female’s apartment “unannounced,” according to Sulphur police.
After Jones arrived, former LSU offensive lineman Brandon Winey showed up at the complex, where the two engaged in a verbal altercation that turned physical.
According to police, Winey produced a handgun and shot Jones in the abdomen. Jones was taken to Rapides Regional Medical Center in Alexandria on Saturday in the hospital’s surgical intensive care unit.
Police arrested Winey on a charge of attempted second degree murder. His bond was set at $1,000,000.
Winey was drafted with the first pick of the sixth round of the 2001 NFL Draft. He played in 24 games for the New York Giants, Washington Redskins and Denver Broncos.
Jones started three games for the Tigers last season, recording 10 total tackles. Most recently, he went through drills at LSU’s Pro Day on Wednesday.
