Baton Rouge residents and most Louisiana residents would be hard pressed to ignore the attraction to University Club’s golf course. When former LSU Tiger and current PGA golfer David Toms helped design the par 72 course, he wanted the course to present more of a challenge to the course’s patrons.
According to its official site, “The University Club is a private facility for golf enthusiasts looking for a challenging experience on a premier golf course with exceptional service that can be shared by friends and family alike.”
Serving as the home of the LSU men’s and women’s golf teams, the state’s largest practice facility attracts premier golfers from around the world to play at one of the finest golf facilities in the South.
Rest assured if shooting holes under the sun does not suit you.
Junior golfer Myles Lewis said the food prepared by the club’s staff is a notch above par, as well.
“The food is very good,” Lewis said. “It’s just a bonus that it’s also located on a golf course.”
After serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, this grill transforms into a casual restaurant that can also be rented for private parties. The clubhouse has been used for rehearsal dinners, graduation events, corporate dinner meetings and seasonal events.
Other amenities support U-Club’s claim as one of Louisiana’s most elite golf facilities. Their five-lane swimming pool and cabana-covered area provides a comfortable setting for visitors not wishing to test their golf skills.
U-Club’s course is not for the slighted or weak-hearted. This demanding course routinely watches multi-stroke leads disappear and even causes its more experienced players pain.
“A round of golf out there can turn ugly in one hole,” Lewis continued. “When you’re playing well, it is very rewarding and breeds confidence in your game.”
For the amateurs serious about improving their game, help is not far away. Aside from coaching the LSU men’s golf team, Chuck Winstead has used his indoor/outdoor instructional facility to become Louisiana’s no. 1 golf instructor.
