Clay Tufts, recently elected Student Government president, and running mate Taylor Lambert were inaugurated late Wednesday night at the SG Senate meeting.
Also that meeting, the senate passed several finance bills and resolutions.
One finance bill passed will take $36,500 from the SG initiatives account to pay for an LSU emergency application for smart phones through the LSU Police Department. Speaker Pro Tempore Trey Schwartzenberg said he thinks the free app will be effective because 87.6 percent of students use smart phones, according to a November 2013 survey. The app lets students press an emergency button that will send the police the exact location of where they are on campus. The application will also allow users to make non-emergency reports concerning theft, suspicious people, drugs and other issues. The official name for the application was not determined, but ”Tiger Shield” was one suggestion.
Another finance bill passed takes $2,351.37 from the contingency account to fund students from the College of Art and Design to build a directory, like a map, which will give direction for the Design Building and additional seating on the first floor.
The last finance bill passed will use $400 to pay for 14 lightning cables at charging stations for mobile devices on campus.
A potential $27,000 in additional seating for the third floor of Middleton Library did not pass after debate between the senators.
A resolution passed requests the Department of Residential Life to create gender-neutral housing options for on-campus residents. The resolution suggests that some residence halls could have gender-neutral halls for students. The bill aims to help transgender students live comfortably in their residence halls by living with roommates with genders of their choosing.
