UPDATE 4/21/2014 3:05 P.M.: Most of Stanford Avenue has been reopened following a gas leak Monday morning, according to a news release from the Mayor’s office. The eastbound lanes of Stanford Avenue, where it turns into LSU Avenue, remain closed.
According to the release, a sewer contractor hit a natural gas line forcing the road closures. The road will remain closed for several hours while the gas line undergoes repairs, according to the release.

The Baton Rouge police and fire department are responding to a gas leak on Stanford Avenue near LSU’s campus.
BRPD spokesman Cpl. Don Coppola Jr. said the intersections of Standford and Perkins and Standford and Lakeshore Drive.
The Advocate reported two houses have been evacuated in the area. Coppola said BRPD assisted with the evacuations.
