It had already been quite the week for LSUPD coming into Friday, but that morning another potential danger to the campus only added to the department’s workload when a suspicious package was found near West Campus Apartments building 8.
LSUPD cleared the area to investigate, and discovered shortly after that the package was a piece of vibrating monitor equipment being used by the construction company working on the new apartment complex off campus.
LSUPD sent a text message warning students to stay clear of the area at 10:43 a.m. and sent a second at 11:06 a.m. to report the incident had been resolved.
The investigation came just three days after a suspicious package was found near Thomas D. Boyd Hall and control-detonated. It was later found that the package contained nothing more than coffee.
LSUPD spokesman Capt. Cory Lalonde said the department took the same precautions it took on Tuesday to clear the area.
“We used the same precautions we have used before. We had students clear the area and sent out a text message warning students to stay clear,” Lalonde said. “Shortly thereafter we sent a text message to report the situation had been resolved.”
The text messages had extra meaning on Friday, with high school students sprawled around campus for Spring Invitational. Lalonde said to his knowledge the students were led by LSU student orientation leaders who received the message, thus the safety of the prospective students had been secured.
