A large population of stray dogs has taken its toll on Russian city authorities causing them to kill dogs through the use of poison.
With the Olympics starting, many of those living in Sochi, Russia are concerned with the stray dog population in the area. Sochi is known for a large number of stray dogs roaming around the city streets.
Russian city authorities are poisoning stray dogs. Many people walking on the streets have witnessed a handful of dogs dying in front of them through the use of poison.
LSU major in national resource ecology David Mahoney says this is a long-term problem.
Many people have taken matter into their own hands by building dog shelters. Unfortunately, these dog shelters aren’t permanent. Dog shelters are pleading with the Russian government for a government finance sterilization program and better laws to protect animals in Russia.
“It’s poor planning on their part,” said Mahoney, “It’s a terrible way they’re going about this. There are so many more humane ways to do this.”
