A new college ratings system could be in effect by the 2015-2016 academic year.
LSU President and Chancellor, F. King Alexander, said the current system is failing.
“We have an approach,” said Alexander, “It says ‘Yes, we ought to start measuring values so parents and students have better information.”
Professor and Director of Political Communication, Rosanne Scholl, said the new ratings system could put limitations on college quality.
“I’m a little bit apprehensive of any group who says that they can measure all of those very diverse and complicated things that we want college to be able to do for people and sum them up in a table,” said Scholl.
The rating system would allocate about $150 billion in federal student financial aid each year.
“We are working with the White House. We are working with the Department of Education. We are working with our Congressional reps to make sure that we’re not simply saying, ‘Give us money. Trust us. It’s worth it,” Alexander said.
Many believe basing incentives on student success would reward institutions for admittance standards rather than how well they educate.
