After two consecutive victories at the PMAC, the LSU gymnastics squad took care of business on the road, defeating Southeastern Conference foe No. 11 Arkansas (3-3, 1-3 SEC) 197.225-196.275.
It was the first road victory of the season for the No. 3 Tigers (4-1, 3-1 SEC) after falling at Georgia earlier in the year.
According to LSU coach D-D Breaux, it was important for the squad to start getting high road scores since they weigh so heavily on a team’s postseason seeding, and she was pleased with the way her squad responded to the challenge.
“It’s huge because we’re about to go to regional qualifying scores, and it’s all about the seeding and the placement of your team at the end of the season,” Breaux said. “Consistency in performance and quality performance is what we train for every week, and I think we did that tonight.”
The Tigers got off to a slow start, however, trailing Arkansas after the first rotation 49.200-49.250.
But senior Sarie Morrison received a score of 9.925 on the uneven bars to capture the title, and extend her school record for career bars titles to 23.
Following uneven bars came the vault routine, and junior all-arounder Rheagan Courville and freshman Ashleigh Gnat led the charge for LSU with matching scores of 9.900 to tie for the vault title.
For Gnat, it was the first title of her young career.
After the second rotation, the Tigers led Arkansas 98.575-98.225, and they never looked back.
Next up for the Tigers was the floor routine, and they were able to score a 49.400.
Courville and junior Lloimincia Hall, who was fresh off the perfect 10 she scored against Alabama last week, led LSU with scores of 9.925, narrowly missing out on the floor title to Arkansas senior all-arounder Katherine Grable, who also captured the all-around title.
But Hall and Courville’s efforts helped the Tigers build a 147.975-147.250 lead heading into the final rotation.
On the beam, LSU improved from the struggles it had against Alabama last week to score a 49.250, which tied a season high.
The Tigers were once again led by Courville and junior all-arounder Jessie Jordan, both scoring a 9.925 to share the title.
The Tigers now have a quick turnaround. They will travel to Norman, Okla., for a match against No. 2 Oklahoma on Sunday.
So even though LSU got the high road score it desired, Breaux didn’t want the celebration to begin yet, for Sunday presents another test for a Tigers squad that has its sights set on a national championship.
“We wanted to walk out of here tonight feeling good but certainly not celebrating,” Breaux said. “They [the Tigers] need to focus on rest and recovery. It’s going to take no mistakes [on Sunday] because Oklahoma is a team that makes no mistakes. It’s going to take our best effort, but we’re capable.”
