Always bittersweet is the last day of Voodoo. There’s always one big act to send the fans home happy and this year it was Foo Fighters.
As I walked around the grounds early in the day, everyone was talking about Dave Grohl and company. Even at other shows conversations such as “should we sit through Trombone Shorty for Foo Fighters” were legitimately happening.
First, no one sits through a Trombone Shorty set. Second, what about all of the other musical acts that are going on throughout the day?
Norwegian singer Monica Heldal had her first performance in America. Houston-based band The Suffers had a crazy Erykah Badu meets jazz band vibe through its set. Awolnation rocked it on the Ritual stage.
Yet people sat for six hours until Foo Fighters took the stage. In my day two blog I explained why I come to festivals, so you can understand my frustration.
I’ve seen Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue play multiple times in my life, but every time is a different experience. I’m sorry for those who missed it.
What I commend Voodoo on is the structure of day three’s schedule. Each stage rotated genres quite well and Flambeau had another solid lineup within itself.
Although I couldn’t be there for Foo Fighter’s set, I’ve seen the band before and I know how good they are live. The hype behind them is definitely understood, but I wish on the last day, the festival goes would’ve expected more than just Grohl and the gang.
Thus ends another Voodoo experience. It was great to see some of my favorite bands again and experience some new ones. Hopefully next year’s festival capitalizes on the successes of this year and tries to fix the failures.
