Molly Ringwald can be considered the poster child of the ‘80s.
The woman was the lead in multiple films released during the decade, one of them being “Sixteen Candles.” The film follows Ringwald’s character, Samantha Baker, during her sweet sixteen birthday. However, the birthday doesn’t stay sweet as Baker deals with multiple embarrassing moments.
Ringwald’s sixteen-year-old character may have had a bad birthday, but executed ‘80s style flawlessly. Her “Sixteen Candles” style revolved around three basic characteristics— color, floral and denim.
One look is a bejeweled denim jacket, pink t-shirt, floral leggings and sneakers with high, pink socks.
This look is incredibly ‘80s, however, is simple to adapt to today’s style. Floral leggings aren’t flattering on many body types, so change the leggings to a floral maxi skirt, or floral shorts. Keep the denim jacket, but keep it plain instead of bejeweled. Any color t-shirt, or camisole in a matching color will work underneath. For shoes, use sandals or boots.
Another look Ringwald sports is a floral dress layered with a t-shirt.
Styling this dress today, take a floral dress and instead of laying underneath it, layer over top with a denim or leather jacket. The dress can be accessorized with tights and boots for colder weather, or sandals if it’s hotter.
Ringwald’s “Sixteen Candles” wardrobe is stylish in the simplest way. Her clothing can be adapted into everyone’s closets simply and can produce a look perfect for any casual day.
This birthday doesn’t seem so bad after all.
