It was an underwhelming season for the LSU soccer team, which failed to make the postseason for the first time since 2006.
However, the Southeastern Conference recently acknowledged the standout performances of two of the Tigers’ most prized recruits from the highly-touted 2014 class.
LSU freshman forward Jorian Baucom and defender Alexis Urch were named to the SEC All-Freshman Team, the league announced Sunday.
Baucom lived up to her billing as one of the nation’s top forward prospects by scoring a team-leading eight goals and and four assists, giving her a team-high 20 points on the season.
It marked the second consecutive season a freshman led the Tigers in scoring.
Baucom kickstarted her LSU career in historic fashion when she scored her first goal 48 seconds into the Tigers’ season opener against Troy on Aug. 22. It was the fastest goal to start a season in LSU history.
TopSoccerDrawer.com listed Baucom, who was a consensus five-star recruit before her career at LSU, as the nation’s 11th-rated freshman of the 2014 class this season.
On the other side of the pitch, Urch’s season got off to a much slower start as the Texas native started in only one of the Tigers’ first four games.
But Urch became a fixture in LSU’s starting lineup against TCU on Sept. 5, and she ended the season with a string of 17 consecutive starts. Urch, along with fellow freshman defender Jordane Carvery, solidified the Tigers’ center back positions after injuries limited LSU senior Alex Arlitt to only four games this season.
Urch also spent time in the midfield this season, and LSU soccer coach Brian Lee continuously hailed Urch as one of the most improved players he’s ever coached.
