When movies include scenes in which construction workers whistle at a woman walking down the sidewalk, the situation is usually used as a comical plot device.
Something that isn’t often discussed is that, in real life, the whistling and cat-calls are contributing to a dangerous culture of street harassment.
Filmmaker Rob Bliss recently partnered up with the non-profit organization Hollaback! to produce a short PSA about street harassment. In less than 2 minutes, the clip showcases numerous instances of street harassment a woman faced while walking through New York City for 10 hours:
