“Nobody puts Baby in a corner.”
“Dirty Dancing” is one of those movies that can still be quoted today. Every time I scroll through the television channels and see the film playing, I’m always drawn in. Maybe it’s the ‘80s soundtrack, maybe it’s Patrick Swayze, or maybe it’s Jennifer Grey’s wardrobe. It’s probably a combination of all three.
Jennifer Grey plays Baby Houseman, a young woman who comes with her family to stay at a camp during the summer. Houseman quickly falls for the camp’s dance teacher, Johnny Castle, played by Swayze. The plot takes on a “Romeo and Juliet” feel when the two start a secret relationship to save themselves from judgments and stares of everyone else at the camp— especially Houseman’s parents.
Grey’s wardrobe as Houseman is fitting to the name “Baby.” Her look includes light colors, easy fabrics and feminine silhouettes. It gives off a very girly and innocent feel.
Houseman rotates through three types of pieces— denim cutoffs, crop tops and tank tops. This is fitting for the setting of a movie, an overnight camp with cabins and nature walks.
This aspect of Houseman’s style is incredibly accessible into today’s wardrobe. Denim cut offs never go out of style and you can follow Houseman’s trend by thrifting a pair of high waisted shorts. While Bermuda shorts aren’t incredibly stylish anymore, those can be swapped out for shorter shorts or jeans.
Crops tops are found in abundance as well. Houseman rotates between patterned and blouse styled ones. While a blouse tied to become a crop top isn’t as acceptable today, this can be exchanged for a blouse that hits at your waist and can be tucked into high waisted shorts. It could also be tied at the top of the shorts to show a little bit of skin.
Tank tops are necessary basics for everyone’s closet and can work with denim if a crop top or blouse isn’t your style.
While Houseman’s look in the movie is primarily casual, the infamous ending dance scene involves her in the classic, white dress.
Her dress is very ‘80s, however, it can be adapted into today’s wardrobe by making it another neutral color like black and getting rid of the heavy tulle. The dress can still be layered and include movement, but getting rid of the retro fabrics will allow it to be more fitting for today’s style.
Houseman’s style is so simple and feminine, hiding it in a corner should never be an option.
