Although the closing at Highland Coffees comes as a surprise to customers, shop owner Clarke Cadzow knew the lease would expire in three years.
When Landlord Hank Saurage and his partner first purchased the property, Cadzow asked him for reduced rent and they both agreed to a three year lease which expires this November.
Highland Coffees has been a part of the LSU community for generations and served as a place for students to do homework or study. Some customers at the shop like Maryland Batiste worry about where they will find a new place to get work done.
“I cry because this is like a home away from home,” Batiste said.
Highland Coffees is closing because Cadzow is now asking for an additional reduction in rent.
In a recent article with The Advocate Cadzow said “We’re surprised and very disappointed with what happened.” “We loved being a part of this neighborhood for the past 25 years.”
Saurage says he is willing to negotiate if Cadzow stays at his current rental price. He also says he is giving Clarke free rent in December to help him figure everything out.
Tiger TV contacted Cadzow, but he refused to comment.
