Freshman defensive tackle Trey Lealaimatafao injured his arm Monday when he punched through a glass window in the team weight room, LSU Sports Information Director Michael Bonnette confirmed. Initial reports said Lealaimatafao may need amputation, but those reports were found to be incorrect.
According to NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune, Lealaimatafao was upset about a disagreement with his girlfriend, but The Advocate cited multiple sources confirming the dispute was with a teammate.
The San Antonio native was immediately taken to an area hospital and treated, Bonnette said. The injury is to his bicep and confirmed to not be “life threatening,” but may jeopardize his freshman season.
The Advocate reported that Lealaimatafao received stitches and will need to return to the hospital today for further treatment, including possible surgery.
Lealaimatafao was rated a four-star recruit by ESPN while playing at Earl Warren High School in San Antonio. He was one of the notable players who signed to play with LSU on National Signing Day this season. He was expected to add depth at a defensive tackle position that lost 2013 starters Ego Ferguson and Anthony Johnson to the NFL draft last season.
