Ah, game day.
The tailgates, the football, the team spirit and most importantly, the outfits.
Saturdays in Death Valley are thoroughly planned days, not just for the day’s events, but for what you’ll be wearing to those day’s events. Whether you want to dress feminine, urban or classic, a fashionable gameday outfit is easy to pull together.
When I think football games, I think of a classic, all-American look. To me, this means a T-shirt and denim. LSU T-shirts and tank tops are easily attainable. Whether you’re looking for something simple or elaborate, it can be found at a local boutique or even at the campus bookstore.
Styling a T-shirt is simple. I love to get mine with a looser fit, so they can be tucked in or tied above high-waisted shorts. I’ll even tuck them into cotton patterned shorts, classic denim shorts or worn-in jeans.
With football season after football season, sometimes your favorite T-shirt will get worn out or slightly discolored. While this is a great excuse to go out and buy new ones, you can keep your older ones by giving them a facelift.
If the collar of a crew-neck shirt is discolored, cut a small V-shape in the middle to remove some of the discolored fabric and make the shirt look new. You call also roll your sleeves to hide frayed edges.
Finish this classic look with beat-up Converse or Vans sneakers and you’ll be ready to tailgate and watch some football.
While a classic look is a good go-to, some would rather not be covered in LSU-brand gear. That being said, you can still support the Tigers without having logos everywhere.
Purple and gold accessories allow you to subtly show your support for the team, if that’s more your style. This can be done with a hat, a purse, a scarf or some jewelry.
You can wear clothing that’s purple or gold, but doesn’t necessarily say “LSU” or “Tigers”.
There are multiple boutiques in Baton Rouge that sell dresses, shirts, pants and skirts in a purple or gold hue. These items can be paired with denim, black or white to make the color stand out. Colorblocking can also be done if you can’t decide between purple and gold for your primary color.
Gameday outfits, like game days, are a sacred thing. But you also have more than one outfit opportunity throughout the season. While your style may be more T-shirt and jeans or a dress and cowboy boots, you don’t have to dress in that one style for every game. Use football season to experiment with the different outfit options gameday offers.
Don’t forget to think about the weather. If you’ll be outside all day tailgating and it’s close to 100 degrees, dress accordingly. The same goes for colder days, rainy days and games where you might be indoors right up until the student gates open.
Whatever your style, have fun with your gameday outfit and take as many or as little risks as
you want.
