Banners from the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity will no longer hang during game days.
That’s a promise the fraternity made in a letter sent to LSU’s Chancellor F. King Alexander Tuesday. DKE apologized for the banner they posted in front of their house before LSU’s football game against Sam Houston State.
Saturday’s banner read, “Michael isn’t the only Sam getting the D tonight.”
“I find what they did was absolutely reprehensible and disgusting,” said Vice Chancellor Kurt Keppler.
The banner referred to Dallas Cowboys defensive end Michael Sam. Sam made headlines in May for being the first openly gay player drafted into the NFL.
Oh DKE, you always have the most offensive signs. 🙈 pic.twitter.com/3v4rm9h2zD

Saturday’s banner was not the first DKE banner to gain media attention. Last year the fraternity was criticized for posting a banner referring to the 1970 massacre at Kent State University. The fraternity later apologized for that banner.
Keppler’s reaction echos that of many LSU students who found the sign offensive and derogatory to gays and lesbians.
ISDS student Bryce Bourgeois was forced to developed tough skin because of discrimination about his sexuality.
“I understand people are small minded and they may not know its offensive but my thing is that it is reflective upon LSU,” Bourgeois said.
Director of Greek Life Angela Guillory said the DKE house is part of LSU’s property.
While many students willingly shared their opinion, members of the Greek community have refused to comment for fear of consequences from their individual chapters.
Keppler says LSU can’t punish the fraternity, but said conversations are taking place between the University and DKE’s national and local chapters.
“We can’t put them in jail. We can’t take away their food. What we have to do is stop teaching them to behave in this way sometimes,” Keppler said. ”We have to differentiate between criminal behavior and inappropriate behavior. I think the most important thing is to get these young men to understand that that they are causing a negative impact not only on their reputation but on the community and institution.”
Tuesday’s letter to Alexander is the first official comment made by the fraternity about the banner.
BELOW IS THE LETTER TO ALEXANDER
“Dear Dr. Alexander,
On behalf of the entire Zeta Zeta Chapter of Delta Kappa Epsilon (DKE), we would like to apologize for the negative light that has been shed on LSU as a result of the banner hung in front of the DKE house on Saturday, September 6th.
It was never any member of our fraternity’s intention to offend others. Zeta Zeta is a chapter full of rich traditions, one of them being our game day banners. Though satire is sometimes the goal, crossing the line and causing offense to others is never the intent. We truly apologize to you and all other members of the LSU community who have had to deal with the effects of this banner.
We hosted Angela Guillory at the DKE house Monday evening with an open dialogue regarding how to move forward from this situation. We feel the conversation was very productive and we appreciate Angela taking the time to talk to us as a chapter.
We will refrain from putting signs up in front of the DKE house indefinitely and will abide by the pre-approval requirement of all signs by our alumni advisors for the remainder of the semester. We recognize this action, when coupled with our fraternity’s recent history, has created an environment where all of our actions are subject to scrutiny. We’re willing to live under such scrutiny and are committed to working with you, Dr. K.C. White and Angela Guillory to earn back your trust and support.
Thank you for your leadership of our university and your consideration of this apology.
The Zeta Zeta Chapter of Delta Kappa Epsilon”
