The LSU men’s golf team started the final round of the Carpet Capital Collegiate on Sunday with a share of the lead at The Farm Golf Club in Rocky Face, Georgia. The Tigers sat in the top spot with Alabama, Auburn, Kennesaw State and host Georgia Tech all tied with a seven-under 569 through 36 holes.
But the Tigers were unable to hold on to the top spot, despite a bogey-free final round 66 (-6) from All-American senior Stewart Jolly. LSU as a team put up a final round 2-under, 286 to finish the tournament in a tie for sixth place with a final score of 282-287-286, shooting 9-under for the tournament.
Jolly led the Tigers finishing in third place individually with three rounds under par, (71-70-66) for a final total of 207 (-9). Senior Ben Taylor and junior Zach Wright each backed up Jolly’s performance by carding scores of 3-under 213.
Taylor started off the tournament strong with a bogey-less first round score of 67 and entered the second day of this three-day event with a share of the top spot. But Taylor was unable to hold on to the top spot for long, putting up back-to-back rounds over par to finish 67-73-73.
Wright, meanwhile, played with consistency, never straying above the course par of 72. Wright carded rounds of 71, 70 and 72 over the span of the tournament.
Sophomore Eric Ricard rounded off the final round for the Tigers as the fifth and final member of the LSU squad. Freshman Blake Caldwell did not play his final round due to illness.
Ricard was unable to get under par in any of the three rounds putting up a final 6-over 222 (73-74-75).
South Carolina led the team standings after jumping up six places with a final round 276 (-12). The Gamecocks were able to edge out tournament host Georgia Tech by one stroke and finished with a final 16-under 848 (291- 281- 276).
Medalist honors went to Georgia Tech’s Ollie Schniederjans who finished 12-under par for the weekend, which included carding a second round score of 64 (-8). Schniederjans’ second round included six birdies and a hole-in-one on the 243-yard par 3 8th hole.
LSU continues its fall season in the Golfweek Conference Challenge at the Spring Hollow Golf Club in Burlington, Iowa.
