The No. 10 LSU football team started out slowly against in-state foe University of Louisiana-Monroe, followed by a series of touchdowns in the second half.
LSU (3-0) defeated the University of Louisiana Monroe (2-1) 31-0 to boast their first back-to-back shutouts at home since 1941.
“There are some things that we need to improve upon, but by-and-large I felt like we did the things that we needed to do to win,” said coach Les Miles.
After going three-and-out on their first two drives, the Tiger offense was sparked by a 26-yard punt return by sophomore cornerback Tre’Davious White.
The offensive drive starting at midfield was stunted by false start and intentional grounding penalties. The drive ended in a 21-yard field goal by sophomore kicker Colby Delahoussaye.
The only touchdown of the first half came from a 22-yard scamper by freshman running back Darrel Williams, putting LSU on top 10-0.
“He’s looking for the contact. Hand tackles are not going to get him down,” said teammate and junior safety Jalen Mills. “He’s playing a very important role for our offense right now.”
Sophomore quarterback Anthony Jennings threw his first interception of the 2014 season to ULM junior safety Mitch Lane at the end of the half.
The Tiger offense started the third quarter with an eight play, 54 yard touchdown drive on their first possession. Williams punched in his second touchdown of the night from one yard out to extend the lead to 17 points.
LSU’s next drive started at the Warhawks’ 34 yard line after an eight yard punt by ULM senior punter Justin Manton. Freshman running back Leonard Fournette capped off the 5 play, 34 yard drive with a 22-yard rushing touchdown.
“If you make a mistake, they’re going to find it,” said ULM junior defensive lineman Gerrand Johnson. “They’re a good team.”
With the Tigers leading 24-0, freshman Brandon Harris relieved Jennings at the quarterback position and orchestrated a 10 play, 58 yard drive. Jennings showed poise in the pocket on a 3rd and 12 play where he delivered a first down pass to sophomore wide receiver Travin Dural.
Senior running back Kenny Hillard scored the final touchdown of the game from four yards out to put the Tigers up 31-0.
Jennings finished the game with 139 passing yards and one interception, while completing 11 of his 18 passes, with 20 yards on the ground.
Fournette lead the Tigers in rushing with 10 carries for 52 yards and a touchdown. Hilliard finished close behind with 12 carries for 50 yards and a touchdown.
“The running backs work hard every day,” Jennings said. “Those guys have a knack for getting in the end zone.”
Dural lead the Tigers in receiving for the third straight game, ending the game with six catches for 79 yards.
The Tiger defense remained in top form, holding the Warhawk offense to 77 passing and 16 rushing yards, with just six first downs.
“It’s really helpful knowing that our defense is going to come up big every game and make stops,” Dural said.
Junior linebacker Duke Riley, filling in for fellow junior Lamar Louis, led the team in tackles with eight on the night.
“We go into every game, doesn’t matter who you are, we are going to bring the same intensity and prevent the other offense from scoring,” Riley said.
The speedy defensive line rushed ULM senior quarterback Pete Thomas early and often, forcing 14 incompletions on 30 passing attempts.
Senior defensive end Jermauria Rasco recorded the only sack for the Tigers, adding two tackles.
The lone Warhawk turnover of the game was a fumble by Thomas, recovered by LSU junior linebacker Ronnie Feist.
Senior running back Centarius Donald was held to 24 yards on 10 carries.
Junior wide receiver Rashon Ceasar lead the Warhawks receivers with six catches for 35 yards.
“I think we are in a position now to take on a very quality opponent in Mississippi State,” Miles said. “We are still needing to improve and take strides but I like where we are at.”
